An educator seeking certification will enter the process at one of the following levels, depending upon background and/or preparation: Certified Christian Educator, Certified Associate Christian, Educator Enrolled Educational Assistant
Certified Christian Educator
Persons seeking certification as Christian Educators must complete one of the following two sets of requirements:
Set One: "Degree Track"
A Master's degree in Christian Education, or a Master of Divinity degree from an accredited theological school. One year's full-time experience or its equivalent as a professional Christian Educator in a church, governing body or agency, with the year ordinarily dating from the completion of the degree requirement. Completion of graduate courses Biblical Interpretation; Reformed Theology; Religious Education Theory and Practice; Human Development; Worship and Sacraments. Completion of course in human development, including faith development. Completion of a course or Directed Study in Polity and in Program and Mission. Completion of a certification exam under the direction of the Educator Certification Council. Completion of Reference Group process.
Set Two: "Service Track"
Previously Certified Associate Christian Educator. Two years' full-time experience or its equivalent as a professional Christian educator. Completion of at least four additional course credits of graduate study in each of the following: Biblical Interpretation; Reformed Theology; Religious Education Theory and Practice and Worship and Sacraments. Completion of a certification exam under the direction of the Educator Certification Council. Completion of Reference Group process.
Certified Associate Christian Educator
Persons seeking Certification as Associate Christian Educator must complete one of the following two sets of requirements:
Set One: "Degree Track"
A Bachelor's degree in Christian Education or a Bachelor's degree in another field from an accredited college or university. Two years' full-time experience or its equivalent as a professional Christian Educator in a PCUSA church, governing body or agency. Completion of at least three course credits of undergraduate study in each of the first four (4) knowledge/skill areas. Completion of course in human development, including faith development. Completion of a Directed Study in Polity and a Directed Study in Presbyterian Program/Mission. Completion of a certification exam under the direction of the Educator Certification Council. Completion of Reference Group process.
Set Two: "Service Track"
Previously Enrolled Educational Assistant. Two years' full-time experience or its equivalent as a professional Christian Educator in a PC(USA) church, governing body or agency, with the years ordinarily dating from the date of being enrolled. Completion of at least three course credits of undergraduate study in each of the first four (4) knowledge/skill areas. Completion of a Directed Study in Polity and a Directed Study in Presbyterian Program/Mission. Completion of a certification exam under the direction of the Educator Certification Council. Completion of Reference Group process.
Enrolled Educational Assistant
Persons seeking enrollment as Educational Assistant must complete the following requirements:
Two years full-time experience or its equivalent as a professional Christian Educator in a PC(USA) church, governing body or agency. (At least one year will be full time and one year may be verified volunteer Christian Education Service). Twenty (20) contact hours, accumulated within the past ten years, in Biblical and Theological Foundations; Religious Education Theory and Practice/Human Development, and age-group skills; Administration and Leader Development Reading of six selected books and responding to questions.
********************************************************** NOTE: In computing a year of experience, the following equivalents apply: 1 year of full-time employment (at least 25 hours per week); OR, 2 years of half-time employment (16-24 hours per week); OR, 3 years of third-time (10-15 hours per week).
Applicants for Certified Christian Educator or Certified Associate must presently be employed at least half-time (more than 16 hours per week) and applicants for Enrolled Educational Assistant must be employed 10 or more hours per week.
